Welcome

Note to the Lane

Average wind speed

Many have asked me about the average wind speed.  Everybody on the lane knows that we have more wind than most other locations in our area.  I have added a table below to show the averages.

The wind seems too low doesn't it?

The software that logs the weather data has three wind values; wind, high wind, and gusts. I have not been able to get a straight answer to the exact definition of each value. What's the difference between wind and high wind? What is a gust? We all know a gust is a sudden, brief increase in speed of the wind, but how much for how long? Sorry, I don't have the answers. Yet.

The solution

I am working with programmer to develop new weather software. I will have answers to the wind questions when we are finished. What I hope to be able to provide is how much time do we have winds over 8 MPH, which is what it takes to run many wind generators at optimum potential.

Weather instruments

Notice on the top-right portion of this page there are now three weather dials.  They are being generated from the weather station software. The red and blue ticks represent high and low for the reporting period, which runs midnight to midnight. From time-to-time the temperature gauge has a gray pointer, which represents wind chill.

Notice also, the gauges have numbers at the bottom of the dial:

  • For the temperature gauge, the top number is the current temperature and the bottom number is the wind chill,
  • For the wind gauge, the green number is the current wind and the red number is the highest wind over the reporting period,
  • For the humidity gauge the number is simply a digital readout of the humidity shown by the pointer.

Thanks for stopping by!
